UA Announces Fall 2016 Dean's and President's Lists

A total of 11,758 students enrolled during the 2016 fall semester at The University of Alabama were named to the Dean's List with an academic record of 3.5 (or above) or the President's List with an academic record of 4.0 (all A's). The UA Dean's and President's lists recognize full-time undergraduate students. The lists do not apply to graduate students or undergraduate students who take less than a full course load.

Georgia Southern University's Eagle Battalion Ranger Challenge team placed second overall at the 6th Brigade Army ROTC Ranger Challenge competition held at Camp Blanding, Florida on Jan. 21-22. Georgia Southern finished first in both the weapons assembly and night land navigation.

The 25th annual Georgia Southern Fall 2016 Commencement Ceremony represented a momentous day as approximately 1,700 of Georgia's best and brightest undergraduate and graduate students received degrees from the University's eight colleges. Approximately 400 graduate degrees were conferred, while around 1,300 undergraduate students received degrees.

The deans of each of UNG's five colleges - the College of Arts & Letters, the College of Education, the College of Health Sciences & Professions, the Mike Cottrell College of Business, and the College of Science & Mathematics - announced the names of those students who made their respective lists for fall 2016. Dean's List recognition is achieved by having a 3.5 grade point average, carrying 12 or more credit hours in one semester and having no grade lower than B.

Coastal Carolina University honors fall graduates

A total of 719 students were eligible to walk in Coastal Carolina University's fall 2016 commencement, compared to 595 in 2015 and 590 in 2014. Two ceremonies were held in the HTC Center on campus, one on Friday, Dec. 16 and one on Saturday, Dec. 17. Speaking to Coastal Carolina University's largest class of fall semester graduation candidates, commencement speaker Susan O'Malley advised the graduates to follow their passions. "If you follow you passion, you'll find your purpose," said O'Malley, who, following her own early goals, became the first female president of a professional sports franchise at age 29 when she assumed the leadership of the NBA's Washington Bullets (now the Wizards).

The Georgia Southern University Army ROTC Eagle Battalion program earned first place in the Task Force Georgia Ranger Challenge Competition on Oct. 21. Seven college Army ROTC programs across the state competed in the Ranger Challenge in Fort Gordon, Georgia, including teams from Augusta University, Columbus State University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Georgia State University and University of Georgia.

Dr. Colquitt L. "Buck" Chandler Jr. Memorial Scholarship

The Dr. Colquitt L. "Buck" Chandler Jr. Memorial Scholarship was established by the CLC Foundation in memory of Dr. Chandler, a successful Atlanta dentist, real estate investor, and philanthropist. The scholarship is awarded to a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Real Estate, selected by a committee that includes the department chair.

College of Science and Mathematics recognizes 2016 Birla Carbon Scholars

The College of Science and Mathematics officially recognized 10 new 2016 Birla Carbon Scholars at the Birla Carbon Symposium. Nearly 100 students, faculty, staff and Birla Carbon executives reviewed posters at the symposium in August 2016. Katerina Slavicinska's research project won the Top Poster Award at the symposium. This year's scholars are: Jonathon Ard, physics; David Axford, biology; Graeme Bettler, chemistry; Soprinye Dappa-Fombo, biology; Rebecca Hyche, biology; Elena Ninova, biology; Katerina Slavicinska, chemistry; Omar Ugarte Trejo, chemistry; Danielle Varljen, biology; and Courtney Willett, biology. The scholars program was developed in April 2014 with a $250,000 pledge from Birla Carbon for a five-year annual gift of $50,000 to support research opportunities for students in Kennesaw State's College of Science and Mathematics. The program has awarded 30 Kennesaw State students each a $4,000 stipend since 2014.

The Rozelle Outstanding Programmer Award is named for James P. Rozelle, a former faculty member of the CIS Department at Georgia State University. It honors undergraduate students in the CIS program with the most outstanding academic record in the programming courses. Winners receive a cash award, and their names are engraved on a plaque that hangs in the lobby of the CIS Department.

On May 6 and 7, Georgia Southern University held its annual spring commencement ceremonies for graduate and undergraduate students at Hanner Fieldhouse and Allen E. Paulson Stadium. Interim University President Jean E. Bartels, Ph.D., R.N., conferred more than 3,300 doctoral, master's, specialist and bachelor's degrees from the University's eight colleges during two separate ceremonies.
